Overall, the job market has bounced back, and all signs point to it continuing its forward motion. The BLS says that between 2014 and 2024, employment is expected to increase by almost 10 million jobs, which is equivalent to a growth of 6.5 percent.
The Top Two
So, which fields will be doing the most hiring in the coming decade or so? According to the BLS, healthcare and technology are your best bets. It makes total sense when you consider that the population is aging and living longer – and of course, technology’s pace is more rapid than ever.
A closer look reveals that the two industries are expected to add a combined 2.3 million new jobs, accounting for about 1 in every 4 new hires. With all jobs in these sectors taken into account, they also represent some of the highest-paying occupations in the nation, boasting a median wage of $61,710. Of course, with so many positions in these fields, the salary can be on the much lower end ($26,440 for healthcare support jobs), or the much higher end – well over six figures for medical specialists technology engineers.
Where the Bucks Are
Among all other occupation types, management jobs paid the most in 2014 with a median annual wage of $97,230. With projections of 5.5 percent growth over the next 10 years, management jobs might pay off, but they’ll be harder to come by.
What You Should Do
Even if you’re not necessarily interested in healthcare, technology, or management jobs, building some of the skills that are required for success in those fields is a good way to stay marketable no matter which career direction you pursue. However if you’re interested in making the leap into one of these areas, now is a great time to begin working your way up.
